Golden Chain Highway 2012

Some maps call it the "Golden Chain" Highway, others the "Gold Country" Highway, but whatever you call it, it's a gem.

Starting just east of Fresno, California Route (SR) 49 meanders 295 miles north to SR 70, northwest of Reno, NV.  It links the mining towns of California's Mother Lode with their colorful names such as Mariposa, Angel's Camp, Placerville and Grass Valley.  The route number itself honors the gold miners known as "49ers" after the rush for riches after the mineral was discovered in the Sierra Nevada foothills in 1849.

Part of the road is nearly as winding as Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee.  But it's a ride worth taking.  Pay attention though, sometimes it's hard to see the trees through the forest!
